“With true missionary zeal nearly 200 members of the Sierra Club in three separate groups, came to Vernal last summer to make the trip thru the canyons of Dinosaur National Monument under the guidance of the competent river pilots. Their avowed purpose was to enjoy the thrill and excitement of the river run, but a member of the first group spilled the beans by revealing the real purpose. He stepped forward and made the following introduction: “We represent the Sierra Club of California and we have come to Vernal to save Dinosaur National monument for you people so they won’t build those dams in there.” “Well,” I replied, “that’s certainly very nice of you, and I’m sure you are prompted by the best of motives, but did it ever occur to you that we might not want to be saved? As it so happens, we don’t. We want to be dammed.”
